Buccal fat pads (Bichat`s fat pads) are an accumulation of the dense adipose tissue which forms fat masses in the cheek. It is located between the buccal mucosa and skin, slightly below the zygomatic bone and participates in formation of facial contours. Buccal fat pads are essential for feeding a newborn baby but in adulthood they lose their functional value and have only aesthetic function.

Bichat`s fat pads have high density, that’s why even during the weight loss, they practically do not change their shape and volume. Their increase is not a pathology but, depending on their size and shape, they can cause aesthetic disadvantage. Therefore, in certain cases, to improve the contour of the face, it is necessary to remove the buccal fat pads.

Removing of the buccal fat pads is a common plastic surgery that allows to reduce visually a surface of the face. Surgical reduction of the volume of the cheeks causes the harmonious changes in the lower part of a face, its visual rejuvenation and smoothing.

Pain control is performed using local anesthesia. Removal of the Bichat`s fat pads is performed through one-centimeter incisions which are made by the surgeon on the buccal mucosa. For suturing incisions one bioresorbable seam is always used which does not require special care, in addition to mouthwash after meals. Sunken cheeks become visible after the end of toe swelling, usually in 2-3 weeks. During the next few weeks patients should follow the recommendations provided by the surgeon.
